Infineon’s CoolSET Gen 5 IPS can enable designers to get better performance, efficiency, and reliability in high-voltage power supply applications.

Infineon has added two new products to the company’s 5th generation fixed-frequency (FF) CoolSET portfolio. The new AC-DC integrated power stages (IPS) comes in 800V and 950V ratings. These IPS can enable designers to get better performance, efficiency, and reliability in high-voltage power supplies. Like other components in the CoolSET portfolio, these IPS combines a PWM controller IC with the latest high voltage CoolMOS P7 super junction (SJ) MOSFETs in a single package. It can also reduce bill-of-material (BOM) count and cost. Housed in a DIP-7 package, the IPS is suitable for applications such as auxiliary power supplies for home appliances, AC-DC converters, battery chargers, solar energy systems, and motor control and drives.

According to the company, the new IPS device includes the first device on the market that uses an avalanche-rugged SJ MOSFET with a breakdown voltage of 950 V to allow for a wider input voltage. It enables both isolated and non-isolated topologies such as flyback or buck and operates at switching frequencies of 100 kHz as well as 65 kHz. It accommodates various needs of the designer as it contains both the flyback topology along with the cost-effective buck topology in a single module.

To enhance efficiency and achieve a lower EMI in mid- and light load conditions, the IPS offers a frequency reduction mode with soft gate driving and frequency jitter operation. It can also be used for single-phase smart metering and industrial applications. The devices also support continuous (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM).

The newer devices in the portfolio come with multiple protection features and high breakdown voltage to ensure the safe and smooth operation of the final product. The highly integrated device can also help to optimise the snubber circuitry to enhance the efficiency and lower the standby power consumption of the converter. These devices also feature an active burst mode (ABM) that improves the light-load performance and enables ultra-low standby power consumption with small and controllable output voltage ripple.
