Embedded system designers face challenges when building high-performance applications that also need strong security, reliable operation, and energy efficiency. The NuMicro M5531 series microcontrollers from Nuvoton address these problems by providing high computing power, advanced security, extensive interfaces, and low power consumption.

These MCUs, built on the Arm Cortex-M55 processor, run up to 220 MHz and deliver up to 371 DMIPS, making them suitable for real-time signal processing, high-speed control systems and other performance-intensive applications. Their 64-bit AXI bus architecture reduces latency in data transfers, while dedicated Tightly Coupled Memory ensures time-critical tasks run efficiently. Hardware accelerators including Helium M-profile vector extension, double-precision floating-point unit, GDMA graphics engine and cryptographic hardware further improve performance without adding system complexity. With up to 1.5 MB SRAM and 2 MB on-chip Flash, many designs no longer require external SDRAM, simplifying hardware and cutting cost.

For developers concerned with security, the series integrates multiple hardware-based protections meeting PSA Level 2 standards. The series also supports complex system integration with a wide range of interfaces. This allows designers to connect diverse sensors, actuators and communication modules without external controllers.

Power efficiency is another focus. The series can run as low as 94.5 µA/MHz and supports low-power peripherals also. Systems can maintain essential functions even in low-power modes, extending battery life for portable or energy-sensitive applications.

Some of the key features of the M5531 series include:

  • Up to 1.5 MB SRAM and 2 MB Flash, fewer extra chips needed
  • Strong security: TrustZone, Secure Boot, AES, RSA, SHA, HMAC, Key Store, random number generator, execute-only memory, OTP, tamper pins
  • Many ways to connect: Ethernet, CAN, I3C, USB, UART, SPI, I2C, QSPI, SD card, camera, microphone, analog controls
  • Uses very little power, can run at 94.5 µA per MHz
  • Supports low-power tools like LPSRAM, low-power DMA, timers, and ADC
  • Helps build fast, secure, and energy-saving systems with fewer extra parts

The company claims that the series helps engineers build faster, more secure and power-efficient embedded systems with fewer external components, simplifying design and reducing overall cost.
