TIDA-00714 reference design from Texas Instruments (TI) is intended for USB Type-C and Power Delivery applications. It provides a starting point for engineers developing products that need USB-C power management, data connectivity, and support for alternate modes. The design supports the development of different power profiles and alternate modes, including DisplayPort. It can also be used to debug existing USB Type-C and Power Delivery systems.

The design includes a USB Power Delivery controller and supports USB Type-C compliance. It can switch between source and sink power ports, allowing a system to either provide power to a connected device or receive power from another USB-C power source. The design also protects against over-voltage and over-current conditions.

For data connectivity, the reference design includes a data-port multiplexer and a USB low-speed endpoint. The multiplexer manages the routing of high-speed USB and alternate-mode signals, allowing the design to support applications that combine USB connectivity with DisplayPort.

The hardware also brings together supporting power and protection components. A DC/DC converter provides regulated power for the system, while ESD protection diodes help protect USB and other high-speed interfaces from electrostatic discharge. Power MOSFETs are used for power switching and management. Together, these components support the power, protection, switching, and interface requirements of the design.

The reference design can be used in a range of personal electronics applications. These include all-in-one PC motherboards, Chromebooks, Windows on Arm devices, docking stations, flat-panel monitors, premium PC and gaming motherboards, and standard PC motherboards. It can support USB-C power delivery and connectivity requirements in these products.

The design also targets industrial applications. It can be used in power analysers and programmable DC power supplies, where USB Type-C connectivity and controlled power delivery can be used for testing, measurement, development, and power management.

TI also provides an evaluation platform for engineers to develop and test USB Type-C and Power Delivery systems. The evaluation board can be used to develop different power profiles and alternate modes, test USB-C and Power Delivery functions, and emulate products such as notebooks, docking stations, dongles, and chargers. It can operate from a single supply or be bus-powered.
