What if one sensor could replace several switches inside a vehicle? A new approach to position detection could reduce wiring, save space, and simplify vehicle designs.

Automotive designers may soon be able to replace multiple mechanical switches with a single sensor for position detection. Melexis has developed the MLX92344, a 2-wire Hall-effect switch capable of detecting up to four positions while remaining compatible with existing vehicle electronic control units (ECUs) and wiring architectures.
The device is designed for automotive body electronics applications including seat-track position monitoring, e-frunk and trunk latches, charging ports, control buttons, and soft-closing doors. By providing multiple position outputs from a single contactless sensor, it can reduce wiring, free up installation space, and simplify system design compared with conventional microswitch-based solutions.
A key feature of the switch is its ability to generate up to four programmable output states. Engineers can assign different current levels to magnetic operating and release points, allowing the sensor to emulate traditional microswitch interfaces without requiring hardware changes. Position information can be read through standard digital inputs or analog-to-digital converters, requiring only software adjustments in many systems.
To support different vehicle designs, key parameters such as switching thresholds, output currents, diagnostic functions, and the number of output states are stored in on-chip non-volatile memory. End-of-line programming also allows manufacturers to compensate for mechanical tolerances during production.
